Mamoru Oshii a 53 ans. Grâce à la série d'animation Urusei Yatsura il deviendra très renommé dans le milieu. En 1995 il réalisera le superbe Ghost in the Shell avant de venir à Cannes pour présenter Avalon en 2001. C'était hors compétition. C'est la première fois qu'un manga est en Compétition à Cannes. Rappelons que Berlin avait décerné un Ours d'or au Voyage de Chihiro il y a deux ans.
